There is a wealth of teaching experience in the department and both Politics and Sociology are long established and successful subjects within Coopers’ curriculum. Many of our students go on to study Politics, Sociology or related subjects such as Law or Public Administration at University.

The department offers AS/A level Government and Politics with the Edexcel board. From September 2008 we will offer the new Edexcel AS/A level which is largely built on the current specification. Details of both the current and new specification can be found by clicking on the Edexcel link on this page.

Our AS/A level Sociology is the AQA course and once again from September 2008 we will offer their new specification, which again is largely built on the current specification. Details of both the current and new specification can be found by clicking on the AQA link on this page.

Currently we teach the AQA Sociology GCSE and AQA short course Citizenship Studies GCSE but because of the redesigned curriculum being introduced in September 2008 we are no longer able to offer either course as part of the new option scheme. Ways of delivering the Citizenship Studies short course outside the option scheme are currently being discussed and it may be possible for students to take this examination in the future.

The department is well resourced and makes extensive use of a wide variety of teaching materials and methods. There are excellent IT facilities available within the department which allows our students to make full use of current developments in Politics, Sociology and Citizenship Studies.

Politics and Sociology are successful, long established and popular AS/A level choices at Coopers’. They are academic and rigorous disciplines which provide students with knowledge of the powers which have shaped and continue to shape the world we live in. Political and sociological factors touch on every aspect of our lives. Both subjects provide a sound intellectual training and are widely respected by employers and higher education providers.
