| Welcome to the Mathematics Faculty |
We have a thriving Mathematics Department, with 9 members of staff. Each Mathematics classroom has an electronic whiteboard and projector. The core text books are supplemented by the use of the internet and subject specific software such as Omnigraph. In addition, students may be taken to one of the school’s computer rooms. The department subscribes to mymaths.co.uk In year 7, the students are taught in their form groups. These classes are mixed ability. In years 8 and 9 students are taught in sets. All students in KS3 are taught using the New National Framework Mathematics books published by Nelson Thornes. At GCSE we follow the AQA Modular Course. There are two tiers of entry, foundation and higher. Students who are entered for the foundation tier can be awarded grades G to C. Students who are entered for the higher tier may be awarded grades D to A*. The majority of our students are entered for the higher tier. The course consists of three modules. The first module is based on Handling Data. The second one is mainly based on number, with a small amount of algebra. These two modules are sat during Year 10. The final module covers the bulk of the algebra topics. It also covers work based on shape, space and measures. The exam for this module is at the end of year 11. Revision classes are held in the run up to examinations. Students in years 7 to 11 are given a formal assessment each half-term. The tests are on all the work covered so far during the current school year. Set changes in years 7 to 11 are generally made at the end of a complete term. Students throughout KS3 and KS4 are rewarded using the school’s merits system. In addition to this, students who are making particular progress, as a result of consistently working hard in Mathematics, are recognised by having letters and postcards sent home. Support for students who find Mathematics difficult is available for students at both KS3 and KS4. Some students are given in-class support. Other students attend Maths Club. In addition, many students also have support from a 6th form mentor. At A level, we follow the Edexcel Modular Course. Students who achieved grade A at GCSE are permitted to study for A level Mathematics. Students who achieved an A* are able to chose between A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. A level Mathematics consists of 6 modules. C1, C2, C3, C4, S1 and M1 are generally studied. Students complete the first two core units in year 12. They will also complete one of the applied units in year 12. These three units combine to make an AS in Mathematics. Students who successfully complete this may then go onto complete the A level in year 13. During year 13 students cover the remaining core modules and the second applied unit. Further Maths comprises the A level maths in the first year. In the second year FP1, M2 and S2 are taken in January to attain AS Further Maths. Then, FP2 or FP3 is required along with 2 from FP2, FP3 M3 and D1. All of which are taught in class. Mathematics is a popular course within the school and many of our students go on to study Mathematics at University. In all year groups, our gifted and talented mathematicians are given opportunities to take part in extension work. Within the Borough, there are individual and group competitions. Our students regularly take part in the UK Mathematics challenge at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level. They often receive Gold certificates which lead to entry in further rounds and Mathematics Olympiads. |
