Mrs S Veysey (Sustainable Schools Co-Ordinator)
"This year, the Green Team have worked really hard, meeting approximately 10 times to secure the Eco-Schools Bronze award.
Firstly we reviewed our existing environmental impact, for example asking people how they got to school, when lights/computers are left on and where we get our energy from. This enabled us to produce an action plan so that we could lessen the damage we do. We raised awareness by creating and putting up posters around the school and explained the issues and our plans in assembly. In discussions with the Headteacher, the School Governors and the Bursar we covered areas such encouraging cycling by having an improved bicycle shed and even the possibility of using solar panels to help heat the swimming pool. Consequently, we have been successful in securing funding for these projects. We have also been able to influence the school curriculum:- Students may remember the poster competition advertising recycling that got many of us involved in this scheme. You can see the progress we have made so far by looking at the Green Team notice board in canteen. I am sure you will agree we have achieved a great deal in one year but now we have our sights set on the Silver award. Already we have been working towards a School Eco-code that will build the foundations for this important next step."Andrew Holland (Form 8.5)
