The Green Team

The Green Team

This year we have focused our attention on improving our environment at school. The Green Team is now well established and making great strides with recycling and reducing energy use. The major development so far has been the installation of 86 solar panels on the roof of the main school building. These have been paid for jointly by grants from London Borough of Havering and the Low Carbon Buildings Programme amounting to £80,000. They have already started to reduce the amount of electricity the school has used from the national grid. So, not only are we reducing our carbon footprint but saving money on energy bills too! (See graphs below).
Not all environmental measures need to be so big and it is important that we all do our bit:

  • If you haven’t already signed up for ParentMail please do so as it saves paper and the other resources used by sending printed letters home.
  • Encourage your family to take re-usable plastic bottles to school and work to cut down on the plastic that is being sent to landfill.
  • Make plans with other families to share lifts to school and get ready for “Walk to School Week” when we return after the summer.
We have lots of plans for next year and look forward to taking more steps to becoming a truly sustainable school.

Bronze "This year, the Green Team have worked really hard, meeting approximately 10 times to secure the Eco-Schools Bronze award. Firstly we reviewed our existing environmental impact, for example asking people how they got to school, when lights/computers are left on and where we get our energy from. This enabled us to produce an action plan so that we could lessen the damage we do. We raised awareness by creating and putting up posters around the school and explained the issues and our plans in assembly. In discussions with the Headteacher, the School Governors and the Bursar we covered areas such encouraging cycling by having an improved bicycle shed and even the possibility of using solar panels to help heat the swimming pool. Consequently, we have been successful in securing funding for these projects. We have also been able to influence the school curriculum:- Students may remember the poster competition advertising recycling that got many of us involved in this scheme. You can see the progress we have made so far by looking at the Green Team notice board in canteen. I am sure you will agree we have achieved a great deal in one year but now we have our sights set on the Silver award. Already we have been working towards a School Eco-code that will build the foundations for this important next step."
