Applications for entry into the Sixth Form in September 2010

The closing date for applications to Sixth Form for September 2010 was
Monday 1st February 2010 and late applications can not be considered.

Thanks for your interest in our Sixth Form. This year we have a vibrant cohort of 410 students all taking AS or A2 courses. We have over 220 in Y12 and anticipate similar numbers to be admitted next year. Each year we admit between 50-60 students from outside the school to join those progressing from our own Y11. Students come from all over Havering, London boroughs, Essex and Thurrock. We would be delighted to consider your application if you feel Coopers might be the place for you.

Why should you consider Coopers’ Company & Coborn School for your sixth form education?

We are one of the largest and best performing comprehensive schools in the area at ‘A’ level.

  • Last summer we enjoyed our best ever results: a 99% pass rate, with 66.5% of grades being A or B grades and 36% at grade A. This continues a trend of consistently impressive results over the last ten years.
  • In 2009 six students gained Oxbridge places; over 20 to London University Colleges; between 5-10 students were sent to each of Nottingham & Warwick, with numbers going to Bristol and Durham Universities.
  • Value Added has been graded ‘outstanding’ by Alps consistently over the last five years.
  • In 2008 the sixth form was deemed ‘outstanding’ in all categories by Ofsted.
  • At the end of Year 12, over 100 students study short Open University undergraduate courses, accruing points that may be counted towards a degree.
  • The pastoral, enrichment and extension opportunities are extensive and supportive.
  • The extra-curricular programmes in Music, Drama, and Sport and excellent are a major feature of the school.
  • A major fundraising project is underway to construct a brand new Sixth Form Centre. This builds on improvements to study facilities made in recent years

If you are anticipating very good GCSE results and considering starting ‘A’ level courses in September 2010, come along to a talk to find out what Coopers’ Coborn can offer.

Information packs will be available on the evening or by post after the 6th January 2010. Candidates unable to attend on the 6th January should write to the School for a Prospectus and Information pack, enclosing a large A4 stamped addressed envelope with 72p postage. Mr D J Mansfield
Headteacher

The Coopers’ Company and Coborn Sixth Form is one of the largest and most successful in the country. The vast majority of our students go on to higher education, with significant numbers going on to the very best universities (including Oxbridge and other elite institutions).

There is also remarkable success in finding rewarding jobs for those students who choose to enter a career when leaving the school. The high number of applications to join the Sixth Form is testimony to its reputation for excellence and its success in preparing students for the next stage of their education. It is no surprise that the retention and completion rate of the Sixth Form are excellent.

The School’s ultimate purpose is to provide a first class education within a supportive and caring environment. The aim is to help each student reach their personal goals. The School’s repeated high standing amongst the country’s best sixth forms is an indication that its successes have not only been substantial but sustained over time. Each year the School looks forward to welcoming new students committed to realising their aspirations within a unique but demanding Sixth Form. The final word is given to students who have chosen to take up this opportunity and challenge...

“Starting and having to adapt to a new environment can be very scary, and I know this from first-hand experience as I was new in the Sixth Form.

I felt like I would have to start all over again with my achievements and impress the teachers so that I could show them my full potential. However, on the first day of arriving at Coopers’ Coborn I instantly knew that I would be able to adapt to the close-knit, friendly and welcoming environment.

The Sixth Form offers an immense amount of opportunities to develop and engage in through extra-curricular activities, committees and societies. When I joined the Sixth Form in Year 12 I organised a Fashion show for charity which enabled me to unite the school, familiarise myself with pupils and teachers and build a trustworthy relationship with my peers. I think that it is essential to attempt to participate in activities or organise events so that you can build trust and gain respect within the institution - and it also helps to gain skills and achievements for when applying to university!

Since joining the Sixth Form I have been a part of six committees and also have the title of being a Sixth Form Captain, which is a great achievement because it means that I am able to represent and voice the view of the entire Sixth Form and be a key figure in organising events such as the Prom.

Coopers’ Coborn provides and facilitates an excellent foundation in preparation for university life with its excellent teachers, high-tech learning environment and friendly nature.”

“I have found my time at Coopers’ Sixth Form to be one of the most exhilarating experiences I have ever encountered. I was fortunate enough to begin my time at Coopers’ at the beginning of Year seven and now I have made it to year 13 I don’t want to leave! The opportunities that have been presented to us are unmatchable at any other schooling institution in the area. These range from trips to New York and amazing drama and orchestra performances to fantastic tutors who are always on hand to aid with your learning. On a sporting level, we have numerous clubs including football, rugby, hockey, tennis and many more. Our first XV rugby squad have proven themselves on a number of occasions to be a revered team on the pitch, along with the various other sporting teams from the School who have played at both a national and international level.

You find that by the time you get to sixth form level your learning becomes much more independent and the relationship with your teacher is much more mature than it would have been throughout secondary school life. I have enjoyed this as I have felt a lot more relaxed whilst learning and, as we are treated more like adults rather than children, I feel a greater sense of belonging and maturity about myself as a result.

I don’t think I would be the person I am today if it was not for the time I have spent at Coopers’ Sixth Form. The way in which each year group is so close knit and sociable makes me want to go to school every day, rather than not look forward to it. I can’t think of a better place to have spent two years of my life, studying and enjoying myself with both friends and teachers alike.”

“I am currently a Sixth Form Captain, as well as a student in Year 13 at The Coopers’ Company and Coborn School. The Sixth Form is an excellent place for study. Coopers’ allows students to experience a wide range of opportunities, not just academically but socially too through extra-curricular activities. Teachers are always willing to help, and being part of the Sixth Form comes with certain advantages. The library has just recently been fitted with ninety new computers, just for sixth formers to use in the aid of private study during free periods. I love being a part of, and representing the School as being part of a close-knit community allows me to feel comfortable in my environment and welcome externals so they too can be a part of the warm academic brilliance of this institution.”

“Starting Year 12 can be a nerve-racking experience, especially because you have been given a lot of advice and heard many comments including, “AS is very hard.” “It’s much worse than GCSE.” “Now you actually have to work.” But I have to tell you that these statements are fundamentally true! However, do not be disheartened - if you work from the beginning, hand in homework on time and follow your teachers’ instructions, you will triumph in the exams! You want to go into the exam room feeling confident that you will know all the answers to questions, so do plenty of practice questions. Don’t leave any gaps in your learning; if there is something you don’t understand, ask for help or research it yourself straightaway - leave it too long and you’ll completely forget about what you wanted to find out! Although AS can be hard, it can also be enjoyable because you get a lot more independence in learning and become confident and passionate in subjects you wish to pursue further i.e. at degree level.”

“For me, Coopers’ has been like a second home . The support and good relations provided here both by staff and colleagues provide a strong community feel to school life here. As a proud student of Coopers’ from the first day of year seven, I have developed and progressed as an individual to enter the Sixth Form as a well-rounded student.

The number of opportunities available for students at Coopers both in and out of the classroom is vast. With after school activities being held on every night of the week including tennis, football, netball, hockey, gymnastics, rugby and many more, it’s very easy to get involved in sport alongside your studies. Whilst in the classroom the chances to excel in your subjects are assisted by the strong teacher support and extra curricular courses available.

Coopers’ Sixth Form is without doubt one of the best educational institutes in the area and by coming here, one is a member of a friendly and pro-active environment that provides a good stepping-stone towards University study. The learning independence and adult-like treatment from staff and pupils allow you to progress your learning for preparation beyond A-levels with a good sense of responsibility and maturity; preparing you for University and or the working environment.”
