"The aim of the historian, like that of the artist, is to enlarge our picture of the world, to give us a new way of looking at things." - James Joll

The History department seeks to develop the students’ understanding of past human experience in all its diversity. In studying a particular period we aim to show the interplay of factors: religious, political, social, economic and cultural. We develop the skills of the historian: use of sources, evaluation, analysis, rigorous argument, both oral and written, and the appreciation of historiography.

The history team is made up of six teachers and is led by Mr Barrington who specialises in modern British history and politics and French history of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era.  Miss Edmeades has responsibility for oversight of the A-level course and also specialises in modern British and European history.  Mr Woodward is a Russian history specialist and is also the Health and Well-Being Co-ordinator for the school.  Miss Wheaton is Head of Year 13 and specialises in British and European Social History.  Mr Dudley-Hart, former head of department, teaches A-level British history and is now Assistant Head, responsible for Key Stage 3.  The team is completed by Deputy Head Mr Bell, who is in charge of the Sixth Form and teaches A-level Russian history.  The department is based on the top floor of the humanities block with three learning spaces dedicated to history.  These are all equipped with interactive projectors and Apple TV.
